Chimney cap installation is the cheapest way to stop a lot of rain from ever reaching the inside of a chimney. An open flue is a pipe pointed at the sky. During a hard storm it can let in gallons of water, which rusts the damper, stains the firebox and soaks the smoke chamber.
We install single-flue caps that clamp to the flue tile and multi-flue caps that cover the whole crown. For most homes that means 304 stainless steel or copper, since galvanized caps tend to rust within a few years and bleed stains down the brick. Every cap we fit has a mesh screen to keep birds, squirrels and raccoons out. In wildfire country we use mesh that meets the local spark arrestor rule.
The cap has to be sized to the flue so the appliance still drafts. A gas furnace or water heater vented into a masonry flue needs a different setup than a wood-burning fireplace, and we check which one you have before we order the part.
